Cloud Services for Today’s Computing

Cloud storage is a means for storing data in binary pools, more commonly referred to as cloud servers. A cloud server is a backup for data to be readily available for access at anywhere across the globe without the need to carry bags of data offline in the form of hard copies, like printed paper, as well as soft copies through external storage drives, like USB flash drives, optical drive discs, etc. Transport of data from one place to another is mainly preferred with portability as to access them everywhere but with digital tools, like cloud servers, data does not even need to be transferred manually for access.

Besides, physical storage devices can be prone to damage as in improper handling, wear and tear, and even temperature gradient across various parts of the globe but cloud drives do not come into contact in-person physically. Cloud computing can also reduce the overall expenditure on the physical resources that are normally stocked for storing data. Data backed up in external storage devices are capable of being stolen or lost due to the physical interaction within the user’s possession.

Some of the basic premises in cloud computing areas today are as follows:

Google Cloud Platform:

Google launched its own unique perspective on cloud storage on 24th April 2012 with startup storage of 5 GB for free through its “Google Drive”. Prior to its arrival, Google Docs was influenced with a storage of 15 GB for free. Since its debut, both Google Drive and Google Photos had a shared roof for their storage while Gmail had a storage unit of 10 GB exclusive to itself. Later, combined storage of 15 GB was allocated to all Google Photos, Google Drive as well as Gmail for free in about May 2013.

Google Drive grew more versatile after its integration with the online office suites such as Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Slides, Drive PDF Viewer, etc. being rephrased as “Google One” in 2018. Until 2020, all data automatically backed up in Google servers were not accounted for in the drive storage. After 1st June 2021, Google announced that the storage unit of Google Photos would be priced if they exceed the storage limit allocated within the corresponding Google Drive.

Google Drive also enables the preview, creation, and editing of office documents online through its “Google Docs Suite”. As of today, Google Drive is the easiest, cheapest, and most commonly used Cloud Service across the globe, marking its glory to be the Best Cloud Storage to be designed ever with an unaltered rate of productivity in Cloud Computing. Google Drive offers increased storage status through subscription planning on a monthly and yearly basis. As of 2021, these are the storage plans offered by Google:

StoragePrice (US$)
15 GBFree
100 GB$1.99/month ($20.99/year)
200 GB$2.99/month ($29.99/year)
2 TB$9.99/month ($99.99/year)
5 TB$24.99/month ($249.99/year)
10 TB$99.99/month
20 TB$199.99/month
30 TB$299.99/month

Apart from the above-mentioned planning, Google also offers unlimited storage as an enterprise feature through Google Workspace. You can also purchase an unlimited Google Drive storage account for a one-time payment from without recurring payments through Google Workspace. Google Team Drives can also be registered for free from through various educational institutions enlisted in it.

MEGA stands for “Mega Encrypted Global Access”. It was started on January 19th, 2013 by MEGA Limited in Auckland, New Zealand by Kim Dotcom, Mathias Ortmann (Chief Technical Officer, Director, and Co-Founder), Finn Batato, and Bram van der Kolk (both of whom are Chief-Marketing Officers).

Initially, it provided storage of 50 GB for free and later reduced it to 15 GB of minimum storage, in the coming years, but with additional storage of 55 GB+ through achievements, such as installation of the MEGA application on your Android Mobile Phone device, installation of MEGA Desktop application in your Windows PC, registration of your phone number in your MEGA account for recovery and security, etc. (including referrals to non-existent members of MEGA for 10 GB each), on a temporary basis of 180 days or 365 days respectively.

Currently, since 2021, it provides a storage unit of 20 GB available in a minimum for free which can be privileged to the same achievements which are reduced to 5 GB each but with an increased time to 365 days temporarily and also through referrals of 5 GB each, again with the same time of 365 days temporarily, thereby providing an increase in storage of 15 GB+ for free in a span of 365 days and making it the only cloud service with the highest storage for free with a minimum of 20 GB, even surpassing Google Drive free storage status of 15 GB on a minimum. It is also the most popular cloud service with high security of end-to-end encryption which is again not possible for Google Drive.

The account options for MEGA are as follows:

  • Free account users receive:
    • 20 GB of storage quota (5 GB of limit per day)
    • Additional storage allowances can be activated through various “achievements”, but expire after 365 days. No maximum storage.
  • Premium users are provided with four tiers of options:
    • 400 GB storage (1 TB of limit per month)
    • 2 TB storage (2 TB of limit per month)
    • 8 TB storage (8 TB of limit per month)
    • 16 TB storage (16 TB of limit per month)
  • Business accounts
    • 3 users minimum
    • 3 TB storage (3 TB of limit per month)
    • Additional TB’s of storage or limit can be purchased with no upper limit

Apart from the general public view of MEGA, you can also use it to your liking unofficially by bypassing the storage limit of your account to import or upload more files and sub-folders inside one folder alone on a one-time basis through your computer’s browser by installing an extension called “Tampermonkey” and creating a new mega script to save it inside the extension as follows:

You must repeat the process in the above video every single time you want to import or upload new files and sub-folders by putting them into one separate folder and by using two MEGA accounts, i.e, one account containing the previous data exceeding the limit of storage space which is to be transferred to the other account containing the new data that is below its storage limit, enabling it to import or upload new data through Tampermonkey extension.

Limitation: Tampermonkey can only bypass the storage limit when the current data in a MEGA account is below its storage limit as it becomes invalid if the limit is already reached before importing or uploading new data. Hence, two MEGA accounts are required at a minimum to perform the above operation simultaneously.
